Ihr Ziel ist es, die Genese der verschiedenen Schulen der Psychologie unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Vorläufer, Hauptvertreter, des Einflusses zwischen ihnen und des historischen Kontexts sowie ihrer Beiträge zur Entwicklung der Psychologie als Wissenschaft zu kennen.Es soll einen Bezugsrahmen bieten, von dem aus die interessierte Person (z. B. Psychologiestudent, Forscher oder Laie) eine integrative Sicht auf die psychologische Wissenschaft und ihre wesentlichen Grundlagen entwickelt. Es werden Elemente zum Verständnis der Prozesse angeboten, die die Entstehung der Psychologie als eigenständige wissenschaftliche Disziplin am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und ihrer Entwicklungen im zeitgenössischen psychologischen Denken markierten.
