Dieses Buch ruft die historischen Traditionen, die Impulse und Anregungen, die vom heutigen Sachsen-Anhalt über die Jahrhunderte hinweg auf die deutsche wie die europäische Geschichte ausgingen, wieder ins Bewußtsein. Im Gegensatz zu der nur kurzen Geschichte Sachsen-Anhalts als 'Land' (1947-1952) steht eine reiche und vielfältige Geschichte des Raumes, den das Land einnimmt. Es gibt in Sachsen-Anhalt daher bis zur Gegenwart eine große Anzahl teilweise einmaliger historischer Stätten und Zeugnisse, die eine etwa 1200-jährige Geschichte repräsentieren, wenn man etwa die Einrichtung des ersten Bistums Halberstadt durch Karl den Großen nach 800 zum Ausgangspunkt nimmt. Damit gehört Sachsen-Anhalt zu denjenigen deutschen Ländern bzw. Regionen, in denen Denkmäler deutscher Geschichte in besonders konzentrierter Weise vertreten sind und somit auch die Stellung des Raumes in der Geschichte dokumentieren. Die vorliegende dritte Auflage der Geschichte des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt wurde erneut überarbeitet und erweitert.
