Kachchh è il secondo distretto più grande dell’India, con un’area di 45.612 kmq. È situato all’estremità occidentale dell’India e la sede del distretto si trova a Bhuj, una piccola città storica situata al centro del distretto e circondata da due lati da catene collinari. Kachchh possiede una terra unica, salina e desolata, priva di vegetazione, con un’area totale di 23.310 km² nota come Rann. Il distretto ha 9 Talukas che coprono il 23,27% dell’area dell’intero Stato del Gujarat, mentre contribuisce solo al 3,03% della popolazione dello Stato con appena 12,5 lakh. Kachchh è nota per la sua popolazione di bestiame superiore a quella umana per il semplice motivo che possiede una vasta area erbosa di Banni, pianure costiere e tratti alluvionali di altopiano roccioso. L’industrializzazione dell’ultimo decennio ha influito negativamente sulla topografia costiera e sull’ecosistema marino di terraferma di Kachchh. Il bacino dei fiumi Khari e Rukhmavati è un fiume che scorre trasversalmente al KHF e che scorre nella zona di cerniera dell’altopiano mediano di Kachchh. Dall’analisi morfometrica di entrambi i bacini fluviali si può concludere che si tratta di bacini controllati dalla tettonica. Le gole profonde in entrambi i bacini indicano un’attività neotettonica.
