Das Ziel dieses Buches ist es, zu untersuchen, warum manche interne Konflikte schnell beendet werden, während andere mehrere Jahrzehnte andauern, ohne dass eine Lösung in Sicht ist. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, wurde die Rolle geopolitischer Faktoren in den internen Konflikten der arabischen Welt untersucht. Konkret haben wir Kohonen-Selbstorganisationskarten, eine auf künstlicher Intelligenz basierende neuronale Netzwerktechnik, zusammen mit Ereignisdauer-Modellen verwendet, um die Rolle der Entfernung zur Hauptstadt, des Zugangs zu internationalen Grenzen, des Geländes, wertvoller natürlicher Ressourcen wie Öl und der Kampfkraft der Rebellen in Bürgerkriegen in der arabischen Welt zu untersuchen. Anhand kürzlich validierter Daten aus mehr als 50 Jahren arabischer Bürgerkriege (1948-2003) zeigen unsere Ergebnisse, dass bisher ignorierte geopolitische Faktoren offenbar eine wichtige Rolle für die Dauer innerer Konflikte in der arabischen Welt spielen.
