Lo scopo di questo libro è indagare perché alcuni conflitti interni si concludono rapidamente mentre altri si protraggono per diversi decenni senza che si intraveda una soluzione all’orizzonte. Nel tentativo di raggiungere questo obiettivo, è stato studiato il ruolo svolto dai fattori geopolitici nei conflitti interni del mondo arabo. Più specificamente, abbiamo utilizzato le mappe auto-organizzanti di Kohonen, una tecnica di rete neurale basata sull’intelligenza artificiale, insieme a modelli di durata degli eventi per indagare il ruolo svolto dalla distanza dalla capitale, dall’accesso ai confini internazionali, dal terreno, dalle risorse naturali preziose come il petrolio e dalla capacità di combattimento dei ribelli nelle guerre civili nel mondo arabo. Utilizzando dati recentemente convalidati che coprono oltre 50 anni di guerre civili arabe (1948-2003), i nostri risultati indicano che fattori geopolitici precedentemente ignorati sembrano svolgere un ruolo importante nella durata dei conflitti interni nel mondo arabo.
