Projekt „Geny, płuca i oddech: badanie genetycznych podstaw niepełnosprawności po gruźlicy' powstał w wyniku kompleksowych działań mających na celu zidentyfikowanie wieloaspektowych czynników prognostycznych tej poinfekcyjnej dysfunkcji płuc. W swej istocie praca ta bada złożone, niezwykle skomplikowane skrzyżowanie, na którym zbiegają się fizjologia układu oddechowego, mechaniczne uszkodzenie płuc, stan odżywienia gospodarza oraz podstawowa podatność genetyczna. Wyniki przedstawione w poszczególnych rozdziałach pokazują, że długotrwałe upośledzenie funkcji płuc nie jest jedynie przypadkowym skutkiem ubocznym infekcji, lecz procesem wyraźnie modulowanym przez genetyczny kod organizmu. Książka ta podkreśla silny związek między trwałym upośledzeniem funkcji płuc a konkretnymi polimorfizmami pojedynczych nukleotydów (SNP) w kluczowych genach obronnych: VDR (receptor witaminy D), SLC11A1 (członek A1 rodziny nośników substancji rozpuszczonych 11) oraz TLR2 (receptor Toll-podobny 2).
