Das genetische Krisensyndrom (GCS) ist ein Konzept, das ein pathophysiologisches Ereignis beschreibt, das mit genetischen Veränderungen in der Mikrobiota zusammenhängt und letztlich zu nachteiligen Auswirkungen auf den Wirt führt. Dieses Syndrom rückte erstmals ins Blickfeld, als gentechnisch veränderte (GV-)Pflanzen aufkamen. Es wurden transgene Technologien entwickelt, um Pflanzengenome so zu verändern, dass sie gegen Schädlinge, Herbizide, Pilze und Viren resistent sind und Trockenheit und Salzgehalt im Boden vertragen. Pflanzengenome wurden durch die Einführung von Genen mit Resistenzen gegen Schädlinge verändert, um den Einsatz von chemischen Pestiziden zu vermeiden, was zu einer umweltfreundlicheren Landwirtschaft führte. Viele Mikroben wurden gentechnisch mit Genen gegen Schädlinge und Fungizide verändert, um die Invasion von Schädlingen zu verhindern, aber die Kontroverse über gentechnisch veränderte Lebensmittel hat nie zu einer Enttäuschung geführt.
