Uganda jest krajem śródlądowym położonym w Afryce Wschodniej, graniczącym z Kenią na wschodzie, Sudanem Południowym na północy, Demokratyczną Republiką Konga na zachodzie, Rwandą na południowym zachodzie i Tanzanią na południu. Położony w dorzeczu Nilu, kraj ten znajduje się pomiędzy szerokościami geograficznymi 4°N i 2°S oraz długościami geograficznymi 29° i 35°E. Prawie jedna piąta kraju składa się z otwartych wód lub terenów bagiennych. Teren ten ma różne cechy fizyczne, od równin po góry i lasy. Populacja Ugandy wynosi około 35 milionów. Gospodarka Ugandy zależy głównie od rolnictwa. Uganda jest obdarzona różnorodnymi zasobami energii odnawialnej, takimi jak biomasa, energia słoneczna, geotermalna, wiatrowa, wodna i inne. Od czasu uzyskania niepodległości w 1963 r. Uganda doświadczyła niskiego poziomu wzrostu produktu krajowego brutto (PKB), który wzrósł z mniej niż 100 USD na mieszkańca w 1962 r. do maksymalnej wartości około 500 USD w 2012 r.. Można to głównie przypisać trudnym czasom politycznym i częstym zmianom reżimu politycznego w tym okresie. Zaobserwowano, że dziesiątki lat nieporządku politycznego i ostrych konfliktów są częściowo odpowiedzialne za tę sytuację.
