Pasaron muchos años y la administración de los territorios al norte de Suramérica no pudieron ser preservados decorosamente por los representantes de la Corona Española. Altos impuestos, falta de oportunidades de trabajo, salud y educación, llevaron a sus habitantes a emanciparse y declarase independientes. Se creó la Gran Colombia. En los primeros 100 años se perdió más del 50% del área inicial por culpa de las ambiciones y guerras entre facciones políticas. Al final quedó la República de Colombia, la cual tiene litigios de límites pendientes con Nicaragua y Venezuela. El país tiene graves problemas de subversión, corrupción, contrabando, altos impuestos, narcotráfico, salud, educación entre otros. El nepotismo en la administración del Estado, es rampante en la mayoría de las instituciones gubernamentales. El país está al borde de la desintegración. Únicamente los ciudadanos responsables pueden actuar para mantener la unidad del Estado y sacarlo de esa situación.
