Com o aumento da idade, o sexo feminino, o nível de escolaridade mais baixo, a residência em zonas suburbanas, a hipertensão, o colesterol LDL, o facto de não ter cônjuge, o baixo rendimento, a limitação das actividades da vida diária (AVD) e o menor envolvimento social foram os riscos significativos de deficiência cognitiva entre os idosos. Os idosos com formação académica superior e os idosos empregados apresentaram um menor risco de disfunção cognitiva. A depressão grave, a solidão e o isolamento social dos idosos revelaram ser riscos de disfunção cognitiva. A prática regular de exercício físico, uma vida ativa, o facto de não beberem e os compromissos sociais activos reduziram o risco de deficiência cognitiva. A prática de ioga e a terapia da reminiscência revelaram-se eficazes para melhorar as funções cognitivas dos idosos.
