A Terapia Ocupacional é uma das profissões que trabalha tanto com idosos saudáveis como com idosos com deficiências cognitivas e funcionais em diferentes áreas de desempenho ocupacional. É por isso que apresentamos o tipo de relação e as diferenças entre o nível cognitivo e a funcionalidade nas actividades instrumentais da vida diária em dois grupos de idosos, os que participam num grupo formal e os que não participam num grupo formal na região de Valparaíso, Chile. Verificou-se uma diferença considerável no nível cognitivo e funcional nas AIVD, onde se observou que o grupo que participava no grupo formal tinha um melhor desempenho cognitivo e funcional.
