Las formas en que se representó la barbarie en el mundo occidental, entre la caída de Constantinopla y la Ilustración constituyen la exploración central de este libro. Con horizontes cronológicos y espaciales amplios, la obra analiza las formas en que textos e imágenes utilizaron la barbarie para dar cuenta de experiencias diversas: el conocimiento de pueblos otros, vecinos y distantes, el acercamiento a costumbres ajenas y la experiencia de violencias consideradas radicales, pero también la simplicidad, la inteligencia, el coraje y la solidaridad. Lejos de sugerir que la descripción y la valoración de la barbarie y los bárbaros permanecieron inalteradas durante tres siglos, la obra busca mostrar las transformaciones y adaptaciones de esos conceptos e imágenes para usos y contextos diversos. Sus aportes originales se asientan fundamentalmente a partir de dos características singulares: primero, un enfoque cronológico y espacial extenso; segundo, una atención especial al mundo de las imágenes, que no las considera meras ilustraciones.
