Das Buch beschreibt theoretisch und empirisch das Selbstverständnis von Führungskräften hinsichtlich ihrer Führungsrolle in der Sozialen Arbeit. Grundlegende Überlegungen zum Selbstmanagement und der Selbstführung von Führungskräften in der Sozialwirtschaft werden  in einem ersten Teil ausführlich dargestellt. In einem zweiten Teil werden empirische Daten einer deutschlandweiten Befragung, in der über 500 Führungskräfte befragt wurden, Einblick in das Selbstverständnis von Leitungskräften in der Sozialen Arbeit geben. Die empirische Datenbasis lässt dabei auch erkennen, wie Führungskräfte Reflexionsprozesse gestalten und wie sie Entscheidungsfindungsprozesse steuern. Zudem wird ein empirischer Einblick in die Konflikt- und Fehlerkultur von sozialen Organisationen gegeben.
