En raison du grand nombre d’espèces de fruits de la passion au Brésil, ce pays est considéré comme l’un des principaux centres de diversité génétique. Différentes espèces de fruits de la passion ont un grand potentiel commercial, y compris la culture en tant que plantes ornementales, soit comme solutions d’aménagement paysager pour les grandes et moyennes surfaces telles que les jardins, les clôtures, les murs et les pergolas, soit comme plantes en pot qui sont utilisées sur les balcons ou à l’intérieur. Compte tenu de ce grand potentiel, l’Embrapa et ses partenaires ont travaillé au développement de cultivars ornementaux de fruits de la passion. Les premiers hybrides enregistrés ont été BRS Estrela do Cerrado, BRS Rubiflora et BRS Roseflora, avec des fleurs à dominante rouge. Pour élargir le spectre des couleurs des fleurs, le BRS Rosea Púrpura aux fleurs roses et le BRS Céu do Cerrado aux fleurs bleues ont été enregistrés.
