Als moralphilosophische Disziplin sucht sie hinsichtlich dieser Problematik seit Jahrhunderten jene klassische Menschheitsfrage zu beantworten, wie sie beispielsweise durch Immanuel Kant seinerzeit schlicht und konkret formuliert wurde: Was soll ich tun?Aktuell stellen sich diese und weitergehende Grundfragen der Friedensethik vor dem Hintergrund der Herausforderungen eines neuen Jahrhunderts in Form von Globalisierung und der zunehmenden Verrechtlichung und weiteren Verdichtung zwischenstaatlicherBeziehungen durch internationale Organisationen wie den Vereinten Nationen und regionalen Abkommen, beispielsweise im Rahmen der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention.
