Der Einzelhandel ist traditionell eine Domäne der Frauenerwerbsarbeit. Er greift damit auf die spezifische soziale Konstruktion eines 'weiblichen Arbeitsvermögens' zurück und orientiert daran die eigenen Personaleinsatzkonzepte, zugeschnitten auf ein fragmentiertes und begrenzt aufstiegsorientiertes Berufsleben. Die Untersuchung fragt nach dem Änderungspotential des Einsatzes von IuK-Technologien, vor allem von Warenwirtschaftssystemen, für diesen Grundtatbestand. Sie beantwortet diese Frage differenziert nach den Be- und Vertriebstypen (Warenhäuser, Kaufhäuser, Discounter), die unterschiedliche Rationalisierungsstrategien und Folgeprobleme aufweisen. Die Entwicklung scheint gespalten. Sie variiert zwischen einer Verfestigung 'segmentierter Teilzeitarbeit' und der Eröffnung eines qualitativen Personalentwicklungsbedarfes. Der Fluchtpunkt dafür bleibt der kollektiv zu organisierende Tausch von 'Flexibilität' gegen 'betriebliche Anerkennung' des anderen weiblichen Arbeitsvermögens.
