L’obiettivo di questo studio è capire come la fotografia d’arte contemporanea nel Regno dell’Arabia Saudita rappresenti la complessa identità nazionale utilizzando il simbolismo e i riferimenti diretti a elementi e manufatti culturali e religiosi. A tal fine, viene utilizzata una combinazione di analisi qualitativa e semiotica per descrivere e interpretare il messaggio codificato implementato nelle fotografie degli artisti selezionati. Con l’aiuto dell’esperienza personale dell’autore nel Regno Saudita tra il 2008 e il 2012 e delle sue relazioni personali con alcuni artisti, l’autore dimostrerà come l’identità complessa e talvolta travagliata dei sauditi si rifletta in queste opere. Sulla base di questo metodo, la ricerca afferma che i problemi affrontati dai cittadini sauditi riguardo all’identità personale, all’identità nazionale e al rapporto con il mondo esterno nella costruzione dell’identità sono complessi e un tema ampiamente ricorrente nella fotografia d’arte contemporanea.
