I cicli solari deboli occupano il massimo e il minimo dei cicli di Wolf-Gleissberg e inducono cambiamenti climatici che causano improvvisi innalzamenti dei laghi dell’Africa orientale. L’improvviso innalzamento del 1962-64 è avvenuto nell’interfase dei cicli 19-20. Il ciclo 20 è debole. Il periodo 1878-1922 di debole ciclo solare iniziò con l’improvviso innalzamento dei laghi nel 1878 dovuto al ciclo 12. L’innalzamento e l’abbassamento ciclico dei laghi si verificarono a causa della forzatura dei cicli solari 13-15. L’improvviso innalzamento del 1997 è dovuto al debole ciclo 23. Le osservazioni dei satelliti altimetrici ci hanno permesso di estendere il nostro studio a diversi laghi dell’Africa orientale e di studiare anche il forzante del ciclo 24. Il forzante solare dipende dal luogo e dal tempo. Gli improvvisi innalzamenti dei laghi del 1878 e del 1997 sono attribuiti a eventi molto forti di El Niño seguiti da eventi molto forti di La Niña. L’innalzamento del 1962 è attribuito all’indice negativo delle Oscillazioni del Nord Atlantico (NAO).
