Os investigadores da história da conceção do ambiente urbano/arquitetónico relacionam o início da sua formação com meados dos anos 50 do século XX, quando pela primeira vez começaram a ser realizadas soluções objeto-espaciais de fragmentos ambientais locais no ambiente em rápido desenvolvimento das cidades europeias. Foram formuladas as orientações básicas dos elementos de design ergonómico do design ambiental. As tradições seculares estabelecidas de separação clara de diferentes tipos de espaços foram complementadas por uma nova visão da cidade com fragmentos ambientais de fluxo suave. Durante o mesmo período, os protótipos de sistemas de navegação de regulação do ambiente, o sistema de inter-relações visuais entre objectos, etc., foram manifestados pela primeira vez na prática do design.
