Her birthday was in April, so I picked daffodils for her. She wore a white flower to church on Mother’s Day and I wore a red one. When she got Alzheimer’s she wanted me to come home and stay with her. I had ordered flowers for her and gave them to her to announce that I was home to stay. She was overjoyed and cried, but she didn’t know me the next day. I planted flowers everywhere to encourage her to walk outside with me. When she passed away it was April, just after her 80th birthday, and I took daffodils when I visited her grave. Now I raise a purple flower high in her memory in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

  • Christmas Past

Christmas was always so special when I was growing up. The tree was decorated with antique ornaments and bubble lights. There was so much delicious food, including desserts that spilled over into my aunt’s kitchen. After our meal, we gathered around the Christmas tree to open gifts, one by one. There always was home, there always was family, there always was Christmas, back...
  • The Library Upstairs

There was a library upstairs in our old farmhouse where daddy had built three rooms and some closet space in the attic. The library was in the middle room. It was just an antique bookcase with doors that was filled with books, but my parents called it the library. There were a lot old school textbooks, but there were also some real treasures-- Heidi, Little Women, the Bobbsey T...

When we got them back home we pre...

Mama could make the best deserts too-- a strawberry pudding made like a banana pudding, coconut cream pies, huckleberry...
