As flavonas têm atividades antioxidantes, antiproliferativas, antitumorais, antimicrobianas, estrogénicas, acetilcolinesterásicas e anti-inflamatórias, sendo também utilizadas no tratamento do cancro, doenças cardiovasculares, distúrbios neurodegenerativos, etc. Além disso, descobriu-se que os flavonóides têm efeito sobre várias enzimas de mamíferos, como as proteínas cinases, que regulam múltiplas vias de sinalização celular, e alterações em múltiplas vias de sinalização celular são frequentemente encontradas em muitas doenças. As flavonas têm sido uma âncora indispensável para o desenvolvimento de novos agentes terapêuticos. Devido à ampla gama de atividades biológicas das flavonas, suas relações estrutura-atividade têm gerado interesse entre os químicos medicinais. O notável desenvolvimento de derivados de flavonas em diversas doenças num curto espaço de tempo comprova a sua importância para a investigação em química medicinal. A presente revisão fornece detalhes sobre os requisitos estruturais dos derivados de flavonas para várias atividades farmacológicas. Essas informações podem proporcionar uma oportunidade para os cientistas da disciplina de química medicinal projetarem derivados de flavonas seletivos, otimizados e polifuncionais para o tratamento de doenças multifatoriais.
