A indústria do chá tem vindo a desempenhar um papel significativo na economia nacional e mundial ao longo dos anos. A Índia continua a ser o maior produtor e consumidor de chá do mundo. As razões para tal são o clima e o solo indianos e a disponibilidade de mão de obra qualificada, que constituem uma vantagem absoluta. O chá indiano tem sido um dos principais contribuintes para a reserva de divisas do país. Além disso, emprega um grande número de trabalhadores e acelera o desenvolvimento de indústrias complementares como a dos adubos, contraplacado, carvão, automóvel, etc. O impacto da globalização, juntamente com as ameaças à importação e o aumento da concorrência de outras bebidas, afectou negativamente a indústria do chá da Índia. O nível de preços tem vindo a diminuir desde 1994, embora se tenha registado uma melhoria marginal no primeiro trimestre de 2001. Verifica-se que os empréstimos concedidos às plantações de chá e à sua manutenção por unidade de terreno são inadequados. Um dos principais pontos fortes do sector indiano do chá é o grande número de pequenos agricultores que lhe estão associados. Com os actuais financiamentos disponíveis, pode não ser encorajador para os pequenos agricultores iniciarem o cultivo de chá.
