L’industrie du thé joue un rôle important dans l’économie nationale et mondiale depuis des années. L’Inde reste le plus grand producteur et consommateur de thé au monde. Les raisons en sont le climat indien, le sol et la disponibilité d’une main-d’œuvre qualifiée, qui constituent un avantage absolu. Le thé indien a été l’un des principaux contributeurs à la réserve de devises étrangères du pays. Il emploie également un grand nombre de travailleurs et accélère le développement d’industries complémentaires telles que les engrais, le contreplaqué, le charbon, l’automobile, etc. L’impact de la mondialisation, conjugué à la menace des importations et à la concurrence croissante d’autres boissons, a eu des répercussions négatives sur l’industrie du thé en Inde. Le niveau des prix est en baisse depuis 1994, bien qu’il y ait eu une amélioration marginale au cours du premier trimestre 2001. Il est établi que les prêts accordés aux jardins de thé pour la plantation du thé et son entretien par unité de terre sont inadéquats. L’un des principaux atouts de l’industrie indienne du thé est le grand nombre de petits exploitants qui y sont associés. Avec le financement actuellement disponible, il n’est peut-être pas encourageant pour les petits cultivateurs de thé de se lancer dans la culture du thé.
