Uma nova técnica, chamada inversão de fase induzida por vapor (VIPI), foi empregada para fabricar filmes de quitosana (Ch) carregados com microcristais de celulose (CMC) e filmes compostos de quitosana/microcristais de celulose (CMC) carregados com curcumina. O método envolve a exposição imediata da solução de quitosana dispersa em CMC ao gás amoníaco. A taxa de expansão (SR) dos filmes mostrou dependência negativa do teor de celulose nos filmes. Os dados dinâmicos de absorção de água foram interpretados por vários modelos cinéticos. O filme de quitosana carregado com CMC mostrou liberação mais lenta em comparação com o filme de quitosana simples, sugerindo que os microcristais de celulose atuaram como barreira de difusão. Os filmes eram não citotóxicos, não trombogênicos e não hemolíticos. Os filmes carregados com curcumina foram investigados quanto ao seu comportamento de absorção de umidade em equilíbrio. Os dados obtidos foram interpretados pelo modelo isotérmico GAB. A liberação dinâmica da curcumina dos filmes foi estudada em condições fisiológicas e os dados cinéticos foram melhor interpretados pelo modelo Higuchi. Os filmes mostraram ação antimicrobiana razoável contra bactérias e fungos.
