La filariosi linfatica colpisce oltre 40 milioni di persone nella regione sub-sahariana dell’Africa. La Nigeria ha il più alto carico di LF. La malattia provoca invalidità permanente e a lungo termine. Influisce sulla qualità della vita delle persone colpite, danneggiandole non solo fisicamente, ma anche emotivamente ed economicamente. L’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità ha richiamato l’attenzione sull’entità del problema e ha lanciato un programma globale per eliminare la LF entro il 2020. Purtroppo, sono ancora necessarie informazioni epidemiologiche sulla distribuzione, i segni clinici e l’intensità della LF in molte parti della Nigeria. Questo libro fornisce dettagli essenziali su distribuzione, morfologia, ciclo vitale, patogenicità, diagnosi di laboratorio, trattamento e prevenzione della malattia. Questo libro aiuta a guidare i decisori nell’esecuzione dell’attuale programma nazionale di eliminazione della LF in queste comunità di due LGA. Sarà utile anche agli studenti universitari e post-laurea. I lettori sono invitati a segnalare eventuali carenze e a fornire suggerimenti per il miglioramento del libro.
