'Fidelis of the Cross, James Kent Stone' is a comprehensive biography detailing the extraordinary life and spiritual journey of one of the most prominent American religious figures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Written by Walter George Smith and Helen Grace Smith, this work traces the path of James Kent Stone from his prestigious academic career as the president of Kenyon College and Hobart College to his profound conversion to the Roman Catholic faith. The narrative explores Stone’s eventual entry into the Congregation of the Passion (the Passionists), where he took the name Father Fidelis of the Cross. His life was marked by deep intellectual rigor, intense devotion, and significant missionary work across North and South America. As a Passionist, his influence extended far beyond the pulpit, impacting the growth of the Catholic Church in the United States and abroad. This volume serves as both a historical record of a transitional period in American religious history and a portrait of a man driven by an unwavering quest for truth and divine service.Accompanied by fourteen illustrations, the book provides a visual and narrative window into the challenges and triumphs of a man who sacrificed social and professional standing for his religious convictions. It is an essential resource for those interested in Catholic history, the history of religious orders, and the psychology of religious conversion. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
