Felix Dahn (1834-1912) war ein deutscher Professor für Rechtswissenschaften, Schriftsteller und Historiker. Zwischen 1882 und 1901 ließ Dahn in 13 Bänden Kleine Romane aus der Völkerwanderung, zwischen 1890 und 1895 ebenfalls in mehreren Bänden eine etwa dreitausendseitige Autobiografie folgen. Aus dem Buch: 'Kaum hatte er die Sohle des Grabens betreten, als ihn aus dem Weidengebüsch lautes Gewieher begrüßte: sein treuer Rappe trabte ihm kopfnickend entgegen. Zwei andere Rosse antworteten aus dem Gebüsch. Gleich darauf krochen zwei Männer, platt auf die Erde sich duckend, auf allen Vieren aus dem Dickicht - Himilco war's, der Centurio, und noch ein Maure. - Sie winkten ihm schweigend, in das Versteck zu folgen. Sie waren nach der Zersprengung ihrer Schar durch die Bajuvaren fliehend in den Wallgraben herabgesetzt: der Rappe, dessen Hüter gefallen, war den anderen beiden Rossen gefolgt. Einstweilen hatten sie sich hier im tiefsten Dickicht des Grabens versteckt.'
