O objetivo deste estudo de caso qualitativo foi compreender melhor os fatores que permitiram aos participantes do estudo superar a violência doméstica. O estudo foi realizado em Nova Iorque, EUA. Os resultados mostraram que as sobreviventes de violência doméstica toleraram as suas situações de abuso por mais tempo porque não tinham o conhecimento e as competências necessárias para deixar os seus agressores de forma segura e permanente.
