This is a study of English surnames written in a popular style, but based upon authoritative early published and unpublished records. The various chapters devoted to clan and tribal names, village and town place names, etc., contain alphabetically arranged lists of surnames with their origins. Separate chapters are devoted to the major sources of surnames such as the Domesday Book, the Liber Vitae (Book of Life), Roll of Battell Abbey, etc. An extensive index contains all the names in the main body of the work, totaling about 5,000 entries, many with multiple references.
