Bisphenol A (BPA) wurde als östrogene Verbindung beschrieben. Es wird jedoch bei der Herstellung von Polycarbonat, Epoxidharzen und anderen Kunststoffen verwendet. Mikrobenmischkulturen, wie z. B. Belebtschlamm, wurden als praktikable Methode zur Dekontaminierung von BPA-haltigem Abwasser vorgeschlagen. In diesem Buch wird der biologische Abbau von Bisphenol A (BPA) mit Belebtschlamm beschrieben, der zuvor nicht mit BPA in Berührung gekommen war (nativer Belebtschlamm). Darüber hinaus wurden der Akklimatisierungsprozess an BPA und die Strategien der Akklimatisierung der Biomasse an die xenobiotische Verbindung analysiert. Die Kinetik und Stöchiometrie des biologischen Abbaus von BPA und seiner Stoffwechselprodukte wurden bestimmt. Schließlich wurde der biologische Abbau von BPA in Gegenwart eines biogenen Substrats in halbkontinuierlichen Belebtschlammreaktoren untersucht.
