Facundo es una popular novela escrita en 1845 por el educador, periodista, escritor y político argentino, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, durante su segundo exilio en Chile. Las primeras tiradas de la obra se hicieron por entregas a través de la sección Folletín del diario chileno “El Progreso”. Su inmediato éxito hizo que se publicara en un volumen independiente. Rápidamente el libro pasó, de modo clandestino, a Argentina, logrando una repercusión inmediata en la opinión pública. Facundo es una obra fundamental de la literatura hispanoamericana por su análisis del desarrollo político, económico y social de Sudamérica, de su modernización, sus potenciales y diversidad cultural. Como lo indica su título, en el texto, Sarmiento analiza los conflictos que surgieron en Argentina una vez alcanzada la Independencia política en 1816, partiendo de la antinomia internacional entre civilización y barbarie.
