Les modèles numériques d’élévation précis et à haute résolution spatiale sont de plus en plus demandés pour un nombre croissant d’applications de cartographie et de systèmes d’information géographique, telles que la gestion forestière, l’urbanisme, la cartographie des calottes glaciaires, la lutte contre les inondations, la conception routière, etc. La technologie LiDAR (détection et télémétrie par la lumière) aéroportée est devenue la technologie privilégiée pour produire des données numériques d’élévation dans un large éventail d’applications. La qualité des MNT dépend principalement de la précision des données LiDAR et altimétriques, ainsi que du processus de conversion des points altimétriques discrets en MNT (interpolation). La technologie LiDAR permettant l’acquisition de données altimétriques tridimensionnelles à haute densité et haute précision, la qualité des MNT repose sur le processus d’interpolation.
