Os materiais nanoestruturados são muito mais eficazes do que os materiais a granel quando utilizados como eléctrodos em baterias de iões de lítio. Isto deve-se ao facto de o seu tamanho mais pequeno permitir que os iões de lítio se movam mais rápida e facilmente, melhorando as taxas de carga e descarga. Também lidam melhor com o stress causado pelo lítio que entra e sai do material. Quando o tamanho das partículas é reduzido para apenas alguns nanómetros, a forma como o lítio reage com o material pode mudar significativamente. Por exemplo, o FeNbO4 com uma estrutura α-PbO2 tem um comportamento muito diferente consoante o tamanho das partículas. Num estudo, o FeNbO4 foi produzido em tamanhos nanométricos e micrométricos utilizando os métodos sol-gel (SG) e reação em estado sólido (SSR). Entre as duas estruturas cristalinas estudadas - α-PbO2 e volframite - a forma α-PbO2 apresentou uma melhor retenção de capacidade.
