This study offers an analysis of the European autobiography, focusing on Paul de Man and Thomas Mann as contrasting figures, whilst seeking to critically compare and contrast newer and older theories. Emphasis is placed on a richly documented analysis and on identifying the characteristic features of this oldest of European literary genres. Numerous examples, primarily from the German-speaking world, enrich the study, which also begins by examining the genre’s ancient origins.
