In 1996 Edmund Wilson received the National Medal for Literature. awarded to 'a living American author for the excellence of his total contribution to literature, ' and the Emerson-Thoreau Medal 'for distinguished achievement in the field of literature.'In 1964 Mr. Wilson was awarded the Edward MacDowell Medal, and in 1963 he was awarded the Freedom Medal by President John F. Kennedy. Edmund Wilson died in 1972.
