Les nanotubes de carbone à parois multiples (MWCNT) ont été découverts il y a environ vingt-cinq ans par Sumio Lijima et sont considérés comme les matériaux miracles du XXIe siècle en raison de leurs nombreuses applications industrielles. La production de MWCNT devrait connaître une croissance considérable au cours des dix prochaines années, avec une capacité estimée à 2 000 tonnes par an d’ici 2015, selon les projections de la National Science Foundation. Environ 6 millions de travailleurs seront employés par l’industrie des nanotubes de carbone d’ici 2020. Actuellement, partout dans le monde, un grand nombre de travailleurs sont impliqués dans la production de nanotubes de carbone dans diverses entreprises. L’exposition professionnelle et publique aux MWCNT augmente avec la production et l’utilisation croissantes des MWCNT dans divers produits. Étant donné que les travailleurs sont impliqués dans la manipulation et la production des MWCNT, la sécurité et la santé au travail doivent être une priorité lors de la manipulation de ces matériaux. Dans la présente étude, les risques potentiels pour la santé liés à l’exposition aux MWCNT dans l’environnement de travail sont estimés.
