La littérature des sciences sociales - anthropologie, sociologie et histoire - s’accorde à reconnaître l’importance des Noirs africains dans la formation sociale du Brésil. Amenés au Nouveau Monde comme esclaves depuis le XVIe siècle, les Africains qui y sont arrivés appartenaient à deux groupes ethnolinguistiques : les Soudanais et les Bantous. Cependant, lorsqu’il s’agit de l’influence des Noirs sur la société brésilienne, les chercheurs se réfèrent principalement à la contribution du groupe ethnolinguistique soudanais, considéré par les experts comme ayant une culture supérieure à celle du groupe ethnolinguistique bantou. Notre analyse a donc cherché à mettre au jour le processus de construction de la nation, qui passe par une tradition inventée dans le but de légitimer le statut d’un groupe ethnolinguistique africain (les Soudanais) comme supérieur aux autres (les Bantous) et de l’admettre non seulement comme partie intégrante de l’identité nationale brésilienne, mais aussi comme son rôle positif dans la formation de l’identité nationale.
