Os microrganismos desempenham um papel importante na afetação das sementes, sendo os fungos o maior grupo. Estes agentes patogénicos são desastrosos, pois reduzem a qualidade das sementes, a germinação e o vigor das plântulas, o que reduz a população ideal de plantas no campo. Um inquérito realizado na região de Konkan revelou que a variedade de arroz Ratnagiri-2 apresentou uma descoloração máxima das sementes (18%), enquanto a descoloração mínima das sementes (3%) foi registada em Ratnagiri-24, Karjat-4 e Sahyadri-3. No teste do mata-borrão, a associação de fungos transmitidos por sementes e a germinação de diferentes variedades de arroz revelaram que Karjat-4 e Panvel-3 registaram a associação de 20% e 35,50%, respetivamente. No que diz respeito à germinação, a variedade Karjat-4 registou 98,50% de germinação, enquanto a variedade Panvel-3 registou 60% de germinação das sementes, com uma perda máxima de 40%. No método da placa de ágar, Ratnagiri-1 e Ratnagiri-73 mostraram uma ocorrência máxima de fungos transmitidos por sementes (25%) e (27%), respetivamente. Nove espécies de fungos, nomeadamente Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium semitectum, Fusarium fusarioides, Curvularia lunata, Curvularia pallescens, Aspergillus niger, Trichoderma harzianum, Rhizopous stolonifer.
