O couro é um bem económico importante. O toque do couro decide invariavelmente a qualidade do couro. O ritmo e o modo de secagem alteram significativamente as propriedades físico-mecânicas do couro. Tipicamente, no fabrico de couros húmidos com cerca de 70% de humidade, os couros são submetidos a uma operação mecânica de espremedura, samming, para remoção de água livremente retida antes de serem submetidos a processos de secagem convencionais para produzir couros com 15- 20% de humidade. São realizadas experiências para obter uma imagem clara de como a variável de secagem afecta as propriedades mecânicas dos couros secos. Um tempo de secagem mais curto e um teor inicial de água adequado são condições favoráveis para produzir couros mais fortes e mais macios. Foi explorada a possibilidade de utilizar a quantidade de massa, tal como a taxa de secagem, para generalizar a relação entre as variáveis de secagem e as propriedades mecânicas. A partir das experiências, pode concluir-se que através do processo de secagem a vácuo se pode obter couros mais fortes e mais macios, que terão alta resistência à tracção, resistência à fissura do grão e resistência à ruptura da língua. Além disso, não sofreriam qualquer desgaste durante os processos de acabamento.
