A importância do líder, a sua emergência, as suas trocas com os seguidores e o objetivo para o qual a liderança existe fornecem-nos as formas como vemos a liderança. Na antiguidade, os filósofos criaram mitos para dar explicações razoáveis e aceitáveis para o domínio dos líderes e a submissão dos seguidores (subordinados). De facto, quanto maiores são as injustiças socioeconómicas na sociedade, mais se distorcem as realidades da liderança - os seus poderes, moralidade e eficácia - para o mito (John P. Kotter 2002).
