É responsável pela obtenção de uma relação denominada relação estrutura-propriedade quantitativa (QSPR) ou relação de trabalho estrutural (QSAR). QSAR, a terminologia mais utilizada com base num método de comunicação em rede (SAR). QSAR é o estudo de como as propriedades físico-químicas de uma série de compostos afectam a sua actividade biológica. As características físico-químicas ou definições teóricas de moléculas químicas ou de fármacos são medidas ou calculadas e estas estão relacionadas com funções biológicas utilizando cálculos matemáticos. Existem muitos programas de software que ajudam a obter estatísticas, mas cabe ao químico médico decidir quais os dados a introduzir. Obviamente, a função biológica de cada composto deve ser incluída, mas o farmacêutico deve determinar quais as características físicas que podem ser mais importantes para a actividade biológica.
