O Bangladesh possui uma herança rica e prestigiada de medicamentos fitoterápicos entre os países do sul da Ásia.Estima-se que mais de 500 espécies de plantas medicinais cresçam no Bangladesh e cerca de 250 delas são utilizadas na preparação de medicamentos tradicionais. Os metabolitos secundários das plantas têm sido utilizados pela humanidade como remédios desde o início da civilização. Atualmente, eles ainda desempenham um papel importante nos cuidados de saúde de cerca de 80% da população mundial. A presença de diversos metabolitos bioativos nas plantas formou a base terapêutica da medicação à base de ervas. Assim, é dada ênfase ao Clerodendrum inerme e à Caesalpinia crista, dois arbustos amplamente distribuídos nos Sundarbans, para avaliar a sua atividade antimicrobiana e efeito citotóxico para uma exploração mais aprofundada dos seus constituintes bioativos.
