En esta obra el famoso escritor Conan Doyle reúne siete casos en los que explora su profundo análisis de la psicología criminal. Se trata de un conjunto de crónicas que originalmente fueron publicadas en la revista Strand en 1901 y que se dividen en dos partes: en la primera aparecen los Estudios del natural, que en principio iban a ser 12 textos, pero que finalmente se redujeron a tres: «El holocausto de Manor Place», «El noviazgo de George Vincet Parker» y «El discutible caso de la señora Emsley». La segunda parte se compone de las crónicas que Conan Doyle escribió sobre crímenes verdaderos: «Los matones de Market-Drayton» (1889), «La travesía de Flowery Land» (1899), «El duelo en Francia» (1890) y «Una nueva luz sobre los viejos crímenes».
