Lo scopo di questo studio è stato quello di analizzare qualitativamente e quantitativamente le sostanze fitochimiche provenienti da diversi estratti di Memecylon umbellatum Burm F. e di valutare la loro capacità di scavenging dei radicali liberi utilizzando vari saggi antiossidanti in vitro. In questo studio, le foglie di M. umbellatum sono state utilizzate per isolare, identificare e caratterizzare i composti bioattivi utilizzando diversi solventi di varia polarità come esano, cloroformio, acetato di etile, metanolo e acqua. Tra questi, l’estratto metanolico ha offerto risultati promettenti per quanto riguarda i parametri fitochimici, quindi è stato scelto da solo per isolare i composti bioattivi. Questo studio ha aperto la strada all’identificazione di nuovi composti selettivamente attivi contro diversi tipi di cancro umano, predominanti in India e nel mondo. Inoltre, l’effetto citotossico e antiproliferativo dei composti bioattivi purificati è stato provato su linee cellulari normali e tumorali umane. Sulla base dell’indagine della letteratura, è risultato chiaro che la pianta influenza le proprietà curative per i disturbi umani.
