Este libro se centra en el papel de la aceren cultural desarrollada por algunos personajes latinoamericanos que residieron en España entre 1880 y 1936. A través de diversos enfoques analíticos, se abordan las trayectorias de diplomáticos de diferente rango que, al margen del ejercicio de sus funciones de representación, actuaron en la vida cultural española. La selección también incluye a algunos intelectuales connotados que desarrollaron una especie de diplomacia informal de repercusiones notables. El arco cronológico en el que discurren las estancias españolas de unos y otros abarca un período que, salvo alguna excepción, se inicia después del establecimiento de las relaciones bilaterales entre los países americanos y la que fuera su metrópoli colonial y toca a su fin en vísperas de la Guerra Civil española. Al margen de lo temporal, el compendio recorre un amplio espectro geográfico que comprende a diplomáticos e intelectuales de México, Guatemala, Colombia, Perú, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Cuba y República Dominicana, contribuyendo a llenar un vacío historiográfico en el campo de las relaciones sostenidas entre estos países y España entre fines del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del XX. Las diferentes aportaciones se sustentan sobre un amplio repertorio de fuentes procedentes en buena medida de los Archivos Nacionales y de Relaciones Exteriores de España, México, Uruguay, Guatemala, Colombia, Perú y Chile, así como de otros repositorios públicos y privados de Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Huelva y Barranquilla. La prensa impresa utilizada en todos los casos procede de distintas hemerotecas españolas, latinoamericanas y de los Estados Unidos.  10
