A ergonomia consiste em analisar a forma de alinhar as tarefas e as condições do local de trabalho com o trabalhador, a fim de aumentar a produtividade, a qualidade e a produção, reduzindo simultaneamente o risco de perturbações músculo-esqueléticas relacionadas com o trabalho, a fadiga e o esforço excessivo. A avaliação de cada posto de trabalho é essencial e deve ter em conta os elementos físicos e psicossociais que influenciam os resultados ergonómicos. Normalmente, um médico de cuidados primários inicia a avaliação em resposta às queixas comuns acima mencionadas. Quando gerida eficazmente, a satisfação no trabalho melhora e a maioria dos doentes retoma as suas rotinas de trabalho normais. Naturalmente, podem ser efectuadas modificações com base na evolução da situação profissional do doente, que pode ser influenciada por resultados anteriores.
