À partir des années 1960, les Églises protestantes traditionnelles en Allemagne, aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni ont développé une politisation de gauche. Cette étude examine si, dans ces conditions, le protestantisme traditionnel est toujours compatible avec le conservatisme. À cette fin, elle compare les conceptions de la religion et de l’Église de trois auteurs conservateurs et protestants: Hermann Lübbe, Richard Neuhaus et Michael Oakeshott. Le résultat montre trois variantes: immanentisation et politisation du protestantisme pour Lübbe; immanentisation du protestantisme par la théologie libérale sans politisation pour Oakeshott; ni immanentisation ni politisation du protestantisme, mais poursuite d’une théologie traditionnelle et de son rôle pour l’Église pour Neuhaus.
