Fahrantriebe werden für verschiedene Zwecke und in unterschiedlichen Umgebungen eingesetzt. Hauptsächlich wird der Fahrantrieb für CVT-Anwendungen (Continuously Variable Transmission) verwendet. Fahrantriebsysteme können eine Alternative zum Getriebesystem sein. Der Vorteil des Fahrantriebs liegt in den glatten Fahrflächen, die eine größere Variabilität und Fähigkeit für höhere und niedrigere Geschwindigkeiten bieten als Getriebe. Getriebesysteme sorgen für die Umwandlung von Geschwindigkeit und Drehmoment von einer rotierenden Energiequelle in ein anderes Gerät. Mechanisch ist ein Getriebesystem in einer Automobilanwendung komplex und muss den Antriebsstrang des Motors je nach Bedarf von den Rädern trennen und verbinden. Es muss die Drehzahl des Motors reduzieren und das Übersetzungsverhältnis des Getriebes nach Bedarf des Fahrers variieren, um das an den Rädern geforderte Drehmoment zu erreichen. Die effiziente Kraftübertragung vom Motor zu den Rädern eines Kraftfahrzeugs ist daher eine der größten Herausforderungen für Automobilingenieure.
