This book is presented to achieve a purpose - the understanding of engineering thermodynamics. It guarantees that an engineering student can study it and understand the subject of engineering thermodynamics without any further aid. The primary requirement is a good background in mathematics and physics at the equivalent of the A-Level requirements. It is written in a manner to allow self-instruction. Prior to its presentation as a textbook, the material has been tried out on different classes of engineering students. Over time, the author grappled with the problems that arise with making students understand the subject of engineering thermodynamics, which is a subject that is confusing to students’ worldwide. An abridged form of the materials in most of the chapters of this book has been presented to students over the years. These students could read the material and understand the principles of thermodynamics prior to any formal lectures. Any one who is studying thermodynamics for the first time needs to study the first eight chapters in the order in which they are presented. Particular applications may then be studied. People who have studied some aspects of engineering thermodynamics will find the book extremely useful. Certain hazy aspects of the subject are properly explained in this textbook. Practicing engineers will find the material useful.
