La historia transporta al lector a un tiempo casi olvidado, ofreciendo una visión histórica accesible sobre los taínos, los conquistadores, los primeros colonos, el Imperio español y la República Dominicana, todo narrado desde la perspectiva de los personajes.La autora también comparte el recorrido de su abuelo, José Fernández, quien dejó su pueblo en España a los 16 años y enfrentó solo las dificultades de la aculturación en el Nuevo Mundo. Tras ocho años en Cuba, se estableció en la República Dominicana, donde formó una familia. En 1963, la familia De La Rosa emigró a la ciudad de Nueva York, enfrentando los mismos retos que tantos inmigrantes.Creciendo en un entorno predominantemente hispanohablante, la autora enfrentó barreras lingüísticas y culturales, destacándose académicamente a pesar de los obstáculos. Tras asistir a una escuela vocacional para niñas, ingresó al mundo laboral sin preparación para la vida corporativa, aprendiendo a través de la experiencia. Su historia es una de autoaceptación, de abrazar su herencia híbrida y de encontrar su lugar entre dos mundos.
